QUESTION:
I have a 10-mth old baby whom I started weaning off at 8 months and was completely weaned off about 10 days ago. However I noticed that there is a small white spot on my right nipple. The white spot resembles a pimple, and feels hard, and looks like hardened milk. It has not gone away and I'm getting worried.

ANSWER:
The white hardened spot that you described is a milk blister, and it may be caused by a plug, such as a granule of thickened milk, blocking the milk flow near the opening to the nipple or a think layer of skin blocking the opening of a milk duct form the outside. The treatment is the same; you need to apply very warm compresses and then immediately put your baby to the breast (if you are not going to nurse your baby, you may need to express in this case). The heat will cause the duct to expand slightly which may allow the plug to pass through. The heat will also thin the skin and the force of the let-down or milk ejection will be strong enough to open up the blister. If this treatment by yourself does not help, suggest you go to a doctor to open up the blister as doing it yourself may result in an infection.
